Pennsic XXVIII

Well, here they are. My friends know that I do this crazy SCA thing, and they know that I was away for a week last August. Here are the pictures that prove that I was doing fun stuff, rather than living in a wattle and daub hut and huddling round a fire gnawing on half-cooked hunks of meat.

Well, actually, that sorta sounds like fun, but it isn't quite what I was doing (the steaks were yummy, though).

What? They have trim???    Toga! Toga!! Toga!!!
This is a picture that Iain took of me
while we were shopping. Shopping
should be a War Point event at Pennsic.
I've never seen so much stuff I'd like
to own in one place in my life --
not even at Barnes & Noble.

I love this outfit... sort of a cross between
a toga and a Celtic tube dress.
Comfy, cool, and it looked really nice.

Kaye and Tasha    Liam, Tasha, and Moira    Eibhlin
This is me with my friend Kaye, whom I met at Pennsic. She and her husband Robin and their several kids were camped next to Iain and me. She and I washed many a dish together, and boy, it was fun!
(Never thought I'd say that.)
(Don't tell my mom!)
These are our friends Liam and Moira on either side of me. They are the nicest couple you could ever hope to meet -- it was their first Pennsic, too. They're members of Duchy Tarragon.    This is Eibhlin (pronounced Eve-lyn). She is a lovely, lovely woman, who helped me gain a certain amount of perspective when I got stressed out. She and her husband Duncan are also members of Duchy Tarragon. Duncan is one of Brion's men-at-arms.

Jon says: There can be only one... Wait, there are three! MO-O-O-O-M!! Duncan and Iain
I guess the boys had some fun with the boffer weapons we had in camp... That's Duncan, Duke Brion and Duchess Anna's youngest son, on Iain's shoulders. They were on their way to the Children's Fête. Iain spent the whole day with them... Anna told me after that he'd make a great dad. She didn't tell me anything I didn't already know. These two warriors are Nigel and Duncan (Nigel is the oldest). They're really great kids, and totally their father's kids. They're really fun to have around.

Well, yes, this is Duchess Anna's
back, but I thought it was a good
picture just the same. In this picture,
Duke Brion is coming to pay tribute
to the lady who inspires him after
coming in as first runner-up in the Best Of
The Best Tournament at the end of Pennsic.
I think I took this picture as he was walking towards Duchess Anna.
The Coup de Grâce
In this picture, Duke Brion had just "killed"
his worthy opponent. I'd never seen him fight before.
This was a very very special tournament.
Here he is advancing into battle.

The Beginning of a Very Long Night
This set of pictures is of my friend Anton becoming a squire to Duke Brion. Here he's toasting the new alliance... and this drink was the start of a Very Long Night. This is Duke Brion putting Anton's household tabard on him, the symbol of Anton's fealty to his knight. From left to right: King Hanse, Queen Moruadh, Duke Brion, and Duchess Anna -- four really, really wonderful people.

The Gates at Windmaster's Hill    The chapel up the track from us
These are the gates into the encampment of The Barony of Windmaster's Hill. The windows are "stained glass" and had lights behind them at night. You could even climb up and stand in the turrets, which had tiki torches burning on them at night. Very, very spiff.    I loved this little chapel. It had a white canvas roof that blends in with the sky. After it was disassembled (yes, it came in panels) to go home, I stopped and told the ladies in the encampment how much I had enjoyed walking by it every day.
