pay the toll

I got all of an entry typed in yesterday and lo and behold! Geocities ate it. I've thought about moving this site to my ISP, but if it's in Geocities I can work on it from anywhere. If I move it to an ASP, I need an FTP program to update it, which reduces flexibility. I guess I'll leave it here for a bit longer, till Geocities pisses me off for the last time.

I've been reading some short stories -- vignettes, really -- by a British gentleman named John Bailey. I found his journal through my friend Cy's journal; they were neighbors in some journalling webring. I thoroughly enjoy reading his journal, but today is the first day that I've ever really read his prose. Some of it I've seen before in his journal, but some of it is new to me, and it's all very good.

He reminds me a bit of James Herriot, in that he tells the stories of his life simply, and with humor and compassion. Maeve Binchy is like that, too. I mean these comparisons as high compliments, as I think that Herriot and Binchy were/are wonderful writers (Herriot, whose real name was Alf Wight, passed away in 1995), as well as being commercially successful. I hope John Bailey finds such success.

I've stepped up the job search. That is to say, I'm actually doing one. (I'm a temp, boys and girls; it doesn't make for a stable financial base.) I'm working with Monster Board, because I like their interface, and I'm looking around for some other sites I can pillage that won't make me twitch. If anyone knows of any jobhunt sites I should look at, please let me know.
That is, if anyone other than my immediate friends is reading this travelogue through my vale of tears (sarcasm, kiddies; it ain't that bad). I was thinking about getting a tracker, but it seems so Big Brother. I'm just going to assume that the increasing number on my counter means that people all over the world are hanging on my every word, and not that the same three or four people are clicking my site on their bookmark list by mistake.
On the garb front: I have yet another item of clothing to make for Boredom War -- a herald's tabard. I asked the question of the SCA Herald's mailing list as to what should go on it (shire arms, crossed trumpets) and where, and the overwhelming response was to put the shire arms on it, everywhere -- front, back, and sleeves. That's what I said myself, originally, and now that I have the backing of many of the herald's of the Knowne World, I can proceed with confidence. I think I'm going to applique everything -- as Baroness Rosalind says, WonderUnder is your friend. (I use Heat-n-Bond, but it's the same thing.) So add that to the list.
