I am a martial artist. I used to say that I was studying to be a martial artist, but now I realize that the artistry is in the studying. I am three ranks away from getting my black belt, and when I attain that goal, I will be ready to begin my study of the arts. Everything up until then will have been merely learning the basics I need to know in order to study without tripping over my feet.

I began studying in New Hampshire, at United Studios of Self-Defense. I had been having a really abysmal day at work, one of an endless series of abysmal days, and was beginning to think that I needed therapy. So I turned to that most fundamental of all reference books: the phone book.

As I flipped through the M's on my way to Mental Health, I ran across Martial Arts. I looked at the display ads with pictures of confident, in-shape people, and realized that I could probably accomplish the same thing with martial arts as I could with therapy, and probably cheaper. Not to mention I could get in shape, get some discipline back in my life, and meet some people in the process. The chances of making friends in therapy are rather slim.

So I called, and Peter answered the phone. I had my intro and fell in love with the art. I started classes right away, in February of 1997. In July of '97 I went to my first tournament, placing third in self-defense techniques and second in forms. I love to compete... if I wasn't already hooked, I was after the tournament.

In September of that year, a series of events transpired that caused me to leave New Hampshire and move back to Massachusetts. I started studying at Villari's Self-Defense Studios in October. I have found a really great place to train and learn. We have a great core of people and have a lot of fun as we learn.
